If you’re a home services professional (contractor) looking to hook up with a company for leads, then I’m sure you’ll be able to appreciate why I think BestContractors.com a company owned by HomeSphere is a very bad idea.

Here’s a little background… BestContractors.com was formed in around 2006 if memory serves me right by Mark Henninger, a Colorado based entrepreneur with drive, passion and a vision to make BestContractors.com the resource for home owners to connect with reputable home service providers. Mark has since formed a successful web based solutions provider called Interactive Directories based in Cherry Creek.

Jan of 2009-ish HomeSphere, a Greenhill SAVP backed Colorado who quickly took over and drove a already struggling BestContractors.com into the ground.

Last year I predicted the downfall of BestContractors.com on my personal blog, something that became popular among employees and VCs behind BestContractors.com alike. At first several of the former employees were claiming they were doing just fine and weeks later were on the streets. These same employees had hit my blog once again claiming that BestContractors.com was done, they were laying everyone off and they (HomeSphere) had treated them very bad. Some claim they were stripped from rightfully ownership in stock, some had other stories but either way they all had a similar situation.

I worked for Service Magic.com as a SEO Consultant back around 2005 and was later recruited by BestContractors.com to help drive their online marketing so I’ve got a bit of experience in the space.

My arrangement with BestContractors.com was to exchange a good chuck of well ranking geo-graphical oriented domain names for stock in the company, I handed over the domains and was never given my stock which is one of the many reasons I tend to believe the ex-employees (former co-workers) of BestContractors.com.

Service Magic is kinda on the right track with their generic lead generation web-pages. Smart.

At one point I tried to connect with Glenn Renner, the President and COO of HomeSphere who falls just behind James Waldrop in the chain of command, a person who I believe is one of the many DMs behind BestContractors.com who are in the public eye struggling with innovation, denying that times in the search engine world are changing quickly and are going to be the ultimate fall behind BestContractors.com which is one of the many reasons that if I were a home improvement contractor I wouldn’t invest into a product and service with such uncertainty. This is something that HomeSphere and the VC’s will without a doubt deny to this day but mark my words unless there are some serious changes to their business models they are as good as gone.
